Espiritualismo

De sus interlocutores dice: «My interlocutors call themselves Spirits, perhaps because I so called them, and Spirits they are to me for my present purposes» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 17».
El material se publicó antes en su periódico: «What is now printed has been subjected to revision by a method similar to that by which it was first written. Originally published in the Spiritualist newspaper» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 20». La condición que el método pide es la pasividad: «As a rule, it was necessary that I should be isolated, and the more passive my mind the more easy was the communication» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 20».
«As to our authority, we have touched on that point before. We claim it to be divine, and we await with confidence the acceptance of our mission when the times are ripe for our teaching» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 88». El linaje en que se colocan es el de los mensajeros bíblicos, con una diferencia de grado que declaran: «We are as they: our message as their message, only more advanced ; our God their God, only more clearly revealed, less human, more Divine» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 68».
De su doctrina dicen que es práctica antes que especulativa: «We tell you of your duty to God, to your brother, and to yourself—soul and body alike» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 72», y anuncian que puede escribirse en pocas líneas: «We deal with practical life ; and our creed may be briefly written» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 72». Lo que sigue a esa lista es una doble negativa sobre la obediencia: «Yield no obedience to any sectarian dogmas. Give no blind adherence to any teaching that is not commended by reason» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 73».
El principio que ordena el resto es la revelación progresiva, dicha sin límite de tiempo ni de pueblo: «You will learn hereafter that the revelation of God is progressive, bounded by no time, confined to no people. It has never ceased» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 73». Ese principio trae su propia acotación, que rebaja toda revelación incluida la que el volumen transmite: la que dice que toda revelación pasa por un canal humano y «cannot but be tinctured in some measure with human error» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 73». Y de ahí la necesidad que se adjudican: «A new revelation is needed. The craving spirit of man yearns for it» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 128».
Ninguna confesión queda privilegiada: «We do not believe that truth is the perquisite of any creed. In all there is a germ of truth; in all an accretion of error» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 71».
El Dios que declaran se define por negación de los rasgos humanos —«No such anthropomorphism finds any place in our creed» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 70»— y la vida, por su continuidad bajo una sola ley: «Life, we teach you, is one and indivisible. One in its progressive development» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 72».
El trato entre los dos mundos se declara sujeto a leyes que el propio comunicante dice no poder formular: «all our intercourse with the material plane is governed by laws which your science has not yet defined» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 133». No proper care is taken of our mediums. The instrument is out of tune» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 133».
It is all this: but it is also other than this» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 144», y se define por su oficio antes que por su doctrina: «It is, in effect, the bridging over, for divers purposes, of the gulf which separates the world of sense from the world of spirit» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 144».

Claims
27 entries«These messages began to be written through my hand just ten years since, 30th March 1873, about a year after my first introduction to Spiritualism» — la introducción de Stainton Moses fecha el arranque de la serie y sitúa su propia entrada en el *Spiritualism* alrededor de un año antes.
«My interlocutors call themselves Spirits, perhaps because I so called them, and Spirits they are to me for my present purposes» — cómo nombra Moses a quienes escriben por su mano, declinando en la misma frase entrar en la cuestión de qué son.
«of these written communications, extending in unbroken continuity to the year 1880, there is no flippant message, no attempt at jest, no vulgarity or incongruity, no false or misleading statement, so far as I know or could discover» — el periodo que la introducción declara para la serie y el juicio que Moses da sobre su carácter, acotado por lo que dice saber o haber podido descubrir.
«What is now printed has been subjected to revision by a method similar to that by which it was first written. Originally published in the Spiritualist newspaper» — dónde apareció antes el material y cómo dice haberse revisado: por el mismo procedimiento con que se escribió.
«As a rule, it was necessary that I should be isolated, and the more passive my mind the more easy was the communication» — la condición que Moses declara para recibir, con la pasividad como variable.
«so on repeated occasions was such information conveyed to me by this method of automatic writing. I argue from the one case to others. In one I can positively assert and prove the conveyance of information new to me. In others I equally believe that I was in communication with an external intelligence that conveyed to me thoughts other than my own» — Moses nombra la técnica, escritura automática, y expone el argumento con que pasa de un caso comprobado a los demás.
«As to our authority, we have touched on that point before. We claim it to be divine, and we await with confidence the acceptance of our mission when the times are ripe for our teaching» — la autoridad que los comunicantes reclaman para sí, dicha como reclamo y puesta a la espera de su tiempo.
«We, too, are the messengers of the Most High, no less surely sent than the spirits who guided the Hebrew seers, and who ministered to those whose fiat settled the Divine word. We are as they: our message as their message, only more advanced ; our God their God, only more clearly revealed, less human, more Divine» — el linaje en que los comunicantes se colocan y la diferencia que declaran respecto de él, que es de grado y no de fuente.
«We tell you of your duty to God, to your brother, and to yourself—soul and body alike. We leave to foolish men, groping blindly in the dark, their curious quibbles about theological figments» — cómo describen el reparto de su enseñanza y qué dejan fuera de ella.
«We deal with practical life ; and our creed may be briefly written» — la frase con que anuncian el credo enumerado que el impreso dispone a continuación en dos columnas; el OCR de esa tabla queda ilegible en varios renglones y por eso no se cita.
«Yield no obedience to any sectarian dogmas. Give no blind adherence to any teaching that is not commended by reason» — las dos prohibiciones con que cierran el credo, que remiten el asunto a la razón de quien recibe.
«You will learn hereafter that the revelation of God is progressive, bounded by no time, confined to no people. It has never ceased» — el principio de revelación progresiva, enunciado sin límite de tiempo ni de pueblo.
«revelation is made through a human channel: and ‘consequently cannot but be tinctured in some measure with human error.
«A new revelation is needed. The craving spirit of man yearns for it. The old has done its work, and from its ashes rises the new, which is to the receptive soul the voice from on high that speaks words of consolation and comfort» — la necesidad que los comunicantes se adjudican, expuesta como ciclo y no como novedad.
«Hence it is not any legitimate cause for surprise that when we teach a spiritualised Christianity we should at first be met with incredulity» — cómo nombran su propia enseñanza, un cristianismo espiritualizado, y qué recepción cuentan tener.
«By commission from the same God, by authority and inspiration from the same source, do we come now as apostles of this heaven-sent gospel» — la continuidad que declaran con el evangelio que dicen predicar de nuevo.
«It is our mission to reverse its teaching, to substitute for it truer and nobler views of God and of the Spirit» — la misión que se adjudican frente a la teología que describen como baja en su concepción de Dios.
«Nor do we teach that there is a special and potent efficacy in any one belief to the exclusion of others, We do not believe that truth is the perquisite of any creed. In all there is a germ of truth; in all an accretion of error» — la posición que declaran ante las confesiones: ninguna privilegiada, todas con germen de verdad y acumulación de error; el impreso pone coma donde la lectura propuesta es punto, y *perquisite* va tal cual.
«No such anthropomorphism finds any place in our creed. God, as we know Him in the operation of His laws, is perfect, pure, loving, and holy, incapable of cruelty, tyranny, and other such human vices: viewing error with sorrow as knowing that sin contains its own sting, but eager to alleviate the smart» — el Dios que declaran, definido por negación del Dios antropomorfo y por la operación de sus leyes.
«Life, we teach you, is one and indivisible. One in its progressive development ; and one in the effect on all alike of the eternal and immutable laws by which it is regulated» — la continuidad de la vida y la ley única que declaran para todos por igual.
«We would further point out to you that all our intercourse with the material plane is governed by laws which your science has not yet defined» — cómo describen el trato entre los dos mundos: sujeto a leyes, y a leyes que dicen no estar definidas.
«No proper care is taken of our mediums. The instrument is out of tune» — el reproche que los comunicantes dirigen a los suyos por el cuidado de los médiums, con el símil del instrumento desafinado que la misma plana continúa.
«the Gospel message of old, a professedly external revelation, coming from the spiritual hierarchy to mankind: proclaimed as a revelation, as a religion, as a means of salvation. It is all this: but it is also other than this» — lo que declaran no ser solamente; la frase empieza al otro lado del marcador de plana, en *Remember that Spiritualism is not, as was*, y por eso el tramo citado arranca en la 144.
«It is, in effect, the bridging over, for divers purposes, of the gulf which separates the world of sense from the world of spirit» — la definición por el oficio, y no por la doctrina, que dan de sí mismos en la misma plana.
«You mistake the results which obtrude themselves on your notice for the total outcome of the movement» — cómo responden al reparo de Moses sobre el saldo del movimiento: señalando que toma la parte visible por el conjunto.
«We are disposed to question your conclusion as to any phase of Spiritualism being bad or mischievous in its outcome, while we deny altogether your ability to pronounce any opinion upon the broad question in its ultimate issues» — el deslinde con que gradúan su desacuerdo, que duda de la conclusión y niega de plano la competencia para juzgar el conjunto.
«the creed we profess and the system of religion which we teach, are vague, shadowy, and impalpable» — el reparo que los comunicantes recogen de sus objetores y que la sección siguiente responde.
