Espiritualismo
La tradición se nombra con la palabra que sus propias obras usan. El volumen que aquí se lee se dice *Spiritualism* de cabo a rabo, y quien lo publica fecha a la vez el comienzo de su serie y su propia entrada en el movimiento: «These messages began to be written through my hand just ten years since, 30th March 1873, about a year after my first introduction to Spiritualism» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 17». El deslinde con el espiritismo no se repite aquí: lo declara Kardec cuando separa su término del *spiritualism* que ya circulaba, y está consignado en la ficha de esa otra tradición «Allan Kardec — The Spirits' Book (White Crow Books, 2010) · p. 5».
Lo primero que el volumen separa es quién sostiene la pluma y quién habla. De sus interlocutores dice: «My interlocutors call themselves Spirits, perhaps because I so called them, and Spirits they are to me for my present purposes» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 17». La serie que recoge se declara continua y con un objeto: son comunicaciones «extending in unbroken continuity to the year 1880» en las que dice no haber hallado «no flippant message, no attempt at jest, no vulgarity or incongruity» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 19».
El movimiento tiene prensa propia y un método que se describe sin adorno. El material se publicó antes en su periódico: «What is now printed has been subjected to revision by a method similar to that by which it was first written. Originally published in the Spiritualist newspaper» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 20». La condición que el método pide es la pasividad: «As a rule, it was necessary that I should be isolated, and the more passive my mind the more easy was the communication» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 20». Y el nombre que le da a la técnica es la escritura automática, con la inferencia que saca de ella: que estaba «in communication with an external intelligence that conveyed to me thoughts other than my own» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 22».
La autoridad que la enseñanza reclama la enuncian los comunicantes en primera persona. «As to our authority, we have touched on that point before. We claim it to be divine, and we await with confidence the acceptance of our mission when the times are ripe for our teaching» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 88». El linaje en que se colocan es el de los mensajeros bíblicos, con una diferencia de grado que declaran: «We are as they: our message as their message, only more advanced ; our God their God, only more clearly revealed, less human, more Divine» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 68».
De su doctrina dicen que es práctica antes que especulativa: «We tell you of your duty to God, to your brother, and to yourself—soul and body alike» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 72», y anuncian que puede escribirse en pocas líneas: «We deal with practical life ; and our creed may be briefly written» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 72». Lo que sigue a esa lista es una doble negativa sobre la obediencia: «Yield no obedience to any sectarian dogmas. Give no blind adherence to any teaching that is not commended by reason» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 73».
El principio que ordena el resto es la revelación progresiva, dicha sin límite de tiempo ni de pueblo: «You will learn hereafter that the revelation of God is progressive, bounded by no time, confined to no people. It has never ceased» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 73». Ese principio trae su propia acotación, que rebaja toda revelación incluida la que el volumen transmite: la que dice que toda revelación pasa por un canal humano y «cannot but be tinctured in some measure with human error» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 73». Y de ahí la necesidad que se adjudican: «A new revelation is needed. The craving spirit of man yearns for it» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 128».
Frente al cristianismo la posición que declaran no es la de sustituirlo sino la de espiritualizarlo. Nombran su propia enseñanza «a spiritualised Christianity» y cuentan con la incredulidad que despierta «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 90», se presentan como enviados de la misma comisión —«do we come now as apostles of this heaven-sent gospel» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 166»— y dicen de la teología recibida que su tarea es «to reverse its teaching, to substitute for it truer and nobler views of God and of the Spirit» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 82». Ninguna confesión queda privilegiada: «We do not believe that truth is the perquisite of any creed. In all there is a germ of truth; in all an accretion of error» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 71».
El Dios que declaran se define por negación de los rasgos humanos —«No such anthropomorphism finds any place in our creed» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 70»— y la vida, por su continuidad bajo una sola ley: «Life, we teach you, is one and indivisible. One in its progressive development» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 72».
El trato entre los dos mundos se declara sujeto a leyes que el propio comunicante dice no poder formular: «all our intercourse with the material plane is governed by laws which your science has not yet defined» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 133». En la misma plana consignan el reproche que dirigen a los suyos por el cuidado de los médiums: «No proper care is taken of our mediums. The instrument is out of tune» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 133».
Lo que la tradición dice NO ser lo dice de sí misma y en dos tiempos. Niega ser solamente revelación externa como lo fue el evangelio antiguo, «proclaimed as a revelation, as a religion, as a means of salvation. It is all this: but it is also other than this» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 144», y se define por su oficio antes que por su doctrina: «It is, in effect, the bridging over, for divers purposes, of the gulf which separates the world of sense from the world of spirit» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 144».
El desacuerdo interno queda dentro del volumen y no se armoniza. Moses objeta el saldo del movimiento y sus interlocutores le responden en dos registros: le señalan que «You mistake the results which obtrude themselves on your notice for the total outcome of the movement» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 139» y gradúan su desacuerdo negándole la competencia para juzgar el conjunto «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 139». También recogen el reparo de que «the creed we profess and the system of religion which we teach, are vague, shadowy, and impalpable» «Spirit Teachings — por la mediumnidad de W. Stainton Moses (Spiritualist Press, 3.ª impresión, 1962) · p. 168», y lo responden en la sección que sigue.
