Hornung declara en el prefacio qué cubre y qué despacha en resumen: «The Books of the Netherworld are the focus of this book; I shall treat such "classical" sources as the Pyramid Texts, the Coffin Texts, and the Book of the Dead more summarily, since other aids to understanding them are already available» «Hornung — The Ancient Egyptian Books of the Afterlife (1999) · p. 20», y por qué lo escribe ahora: «it seems time to venture a summary and orientation for nonspecialists, who are otherwise con¬ fronted by a growing body of literature» «Hornung — The Ancient Egyptian Books of the Afterlife (1999) · p. 21».
The Ancient Egyptian Books of the Afterlife (1999) · p. 9».

«With the discovery of the Pyramid Texts in 1880-1881, research interest turned to that collection of spells, which is nearly a thousand years earlier» — fecha el descubrimiento de los Textos de las Pirámides en 1880-1881 y dice que el interés viró hacia ellos por ser casi mil años más antiguos
«But the other large group of texts dealing with the afterlife, the Books of the Netherworld (once also called Guides to the Afterlife) long led a shadowy existence» — Hornung contrapone el otro gran grupo, los Libros del Inframundo —antes llamados Guías del Más Allá—, y dice que llevaron mucho tiempo una existencia en la sombra
«Their actual discoverer was Jean-Frangois Champollion, who saw these compositions when he visited the Valley of the Kings in 1829 and immediately recognized their significance» — adjudica el descubrimiento efectivo a Champollion, que vio esas composiciones en el Valle de los Reyes en 1829; el troceo imprime el nombre de pila *Jean-Frangois*, por Jean-François, y parte el apellido a fin de renglón
«He had prepared the first translation from the Book of Gates and the Book of Caverns when his untimely death cut short his work» — Hornung dice que Champollion tenía lista la primera traducción del Libro de las Puertas y del Libro de las Cavernas cuando su muerte temprana interrumpió el trabajo
«Later in the nineteenth century, Gaston Maspero and Eu¬ gene Lefebure in particular devoted themselves to deciphering the Books of the Afterlife» — nombra a Maspero y a Eugène Lefébure como los que se dedicaron después a descifrar los Libros del Más Allá; el troceo parte el nombre de pila a fin de renglón con el guion de corte que este OCR escribe como ¬, y el apellido va sin acentos
«In time, however, a widespread, rather negative attitude emerged toward these "abstruse" priestly fantasies, as they were adjudged, and leading specialists no longer deemed it worthwhile» — registra el giro de la opinión especializada: una actitud negativa extendida que dio esos textos por fantasías sacerdotales abstrusas y dejó de tenerlos por dignos de estudio
«It is typical that the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922 aroused the world's interest in the material riches of the Valley of the Kings while creating no momentum for the study of its spiritual trea» — Hornung contrasta el efecto del hallazgo de la tumba de Tutankamón en 1922: despertó el interés mundial por las riquezas materiales del Valle de los Reyes y ninguno por sus tesoros espirituales
«Alexandre Piankoff (1897-1966) was the first to undertake a systematic study of the religious books in the royal tombs, and he issued a steady stream of text editions, translations, and other» — da a Piankoff, con sus fechas, por el primero que emprendió a mediados de los años treinta el estudio sistemático de los libros religiosos de las tumbas reales
«With his splendid edition of the tomb of Ramesses VI in 1954' which was prepared under the auspices of the Bollingen Foundation, he made practically all the relevant texts available in English translation» — Hornung fija en la edición de la tumba de Ramsés VI de 1954, hecha bajo los auspicios de la Fundación Bollingen, el momento en que prácticamente todos los textos quedaron disponibles en inglés
«Beginning in 1958,1 had the pleasure of working with Piankoff, after Siegfried Schott had repeatedly called my attention to the Books of the» — Hornung fecha en 1958 su propio trabajo con Piankoff y acredita a Siegfried Schott el haberle señalado repetidas veces los Libros del Inframundo; el troceo imprime *1958,1* donde el impreso lleva la coma y el pronombre
«Meanwhile, they have been generally recognized as an important source for the history of Egyptian religion, and especially for beliefs regarding the afterlife, and they have even received attention outside the field of Egyptology, especially from members of the Jungian school of psychoanalysis» — señala que los Libros del Inframundo ya se tienen por fuente importante de la historia de la religión egipcia y que han recibido atención fuera de la egiptología, en particular de la escuela junguiana de psicoanálisis
«Additionally, in all periods the Egyptian mortuary cult employed numerous other texts, which have been desig¬ nated "mortuary liturgies" (in German, Verklarungen), to which Jan Assmann has devoted special attention» — Hornung acota que el culto funerario egipcio empleó en todas las épocas otros muchos textos llamados liturgias funerarias, en alemán *Verklarungen*, y remite a Jan Assmann como quien les ha dedicado atención especial
«It is an open question to what extent these compositions, which are so distinct in form, reflect a monolithic conception of the afterlife» — declara abierta la cuestión de hasta qué punto esas composiciones, tan distintas en forma, reflejan una concepción monolítica del más allá
«of his letters from Egypt, dated May 26,1829, he gives a detailed account of the decoration of the royal tombs accessible in his day, espe¬ cially that of the tomb of Ramesses VI, where he completed a number of» — remite a la decimotercera de las cartas de Champollion desde Egipto, fechada el 26 de mayo de 1829, como descripción detallada de las tumbas reales accesibles entonces, la de Ramsés VI en particular
«The New Kingdom undoubtedly added fresh accents of its own: we can character¬ ize the difference between the Book of the Dead and the Books of the Netherworld by noting that only the latter actually give detailed descrip¬ tions of the hereafter; the spells of the Book of the Dead are concerned with practical assistance regarding the journey to the afterlife and the deceased's stay there» — Hornung fija la diferencia entre el Libro de los Muertos y los Libros del Inframundo: solo estos describen el más allá con detalle, mientras los conjuros del primero atienden a la asistencia práctica del viaje y de la estancia
«Most of the books and collections of spells treated here were still in use in the Late Period. At that time, whole libraries of ancient writings were collected on tomb walls and sarcophagi for use in the afterlife» — Hornung extiende el uso de casi todos estos libros hasta la Época Baja, cuando se reunían bibliotecas enteras de escritos antiguos en muros de tumba y sarcófagos
«All the conditions were thus at hand for an influence that contin¬ ued beyond the pharaonic period and into the new spiritual currents of Hellenism and early Christian» — sostiene que estaban dadas las condiciones para una influencia que siguió más allá del periodo faraónico, hacia las corrientes espirituales nuevas del helenismo y el cristianismo primitivo
«In the Books of the Netherworld, as in classical esoterica, the "sun at midnight" stood at the center of the expe¬ rience of the afterlife, and along with the myth of Osiris the course of the sun played an important role in the Hellenistic Isis mysteries» — Hornung pone el sol de medianoche en el centro de la experiencia del más allá, tanto en los Libros del Inframundo como en la esotérica clásica, y da al curso solar un papel importante en los misterios helenísticos de Isis junto al mito de Osiris

«compositions, so that some of them—the Pyramid Texts, the Books of the Netherworld, and the Books of the Sky—were reserved for the ex¬ clusive use of Pharaoh, just as certain forms of architecture and meas¬ urement served only for use in the realm of royalty» — continuación del pasaje anterior, cortada en el límite de chunk: Hornung sostiene que hubo un esfuerzo por jerarquizar las composiciones —Textos de las Pirámides, Libros del Inframundo y Libros del Cielo reservados al faraón—, como pasaba con ciertas formas de arquitectura y de medida. El tramo anterior termina en *There was also an effort to maintain a hierarchy of*
«Middle Kingdom (Coffin Texts) c. 1987-1640 b.c.e.

«Beginning with Wenis, the last king of Dy¬ nasty 5 (c. 2350 b.c.e.), varying selections of spells were carved in all the royal pyramids of the Old Kingdom, especially in the sarcophagus chambers and their antechambers» — data el arranque en Wenis, último rey de la dinastía 5 hacia 2350 a.
«After 2200 b.c.e., under Pepy II, they were also employed in the pyramids of queens, and after the end of the Old Kingdom, they appeared on the tomb walls and» — Hornung traza la difusión del corpus: bajo Pepy II pasa a las pirámides de reinas y, tras el fin del Reino Antiguo, a muros de tumba y ataúdes de funcionarios
«In the Middle Kingdom, the pyramids were free of texts, so that when Wenis's version appeared in the mastaba of Senwosretankh at Lisht, it was practically unaltered; many pyramid spells, however, continued to be employed on coffins of this period» — registra que en el Reino Medio las pirámides quedaron sin textos, de modo que la versión de Wenis reaparece casi inalterada en la mastaba de Senwosretankh en Lisht, mientras muchos conjuros siguieron en los ataúdes
«Spells from this corpus were still in use in the Late Period, in tombs and on sarcophagi» — extiende el uso del corpus hasta la Época Baja, en tumbas y sarcófagos

«The textual basis was substantially expanded by the investi¬ gations of Gustave Jequier in southern Saqqara from 1924 to 1936, in the course of which he was able to secure considerably more spells in the pyramid of Pepy II while also discovering the versions in the pyramids of queens Wedjebten (1925-1926), Neith, and Iput (1931-1932) and in the later tomb of Ibi» — adjudica a Jéquier la ampliación sustancial de la base textual en Saqqara meridional entre 1924 y 1936, con más conjuros en la pirámide de Pepy II y el hallazgo de las versiones de las reinas y de la tumba de Ibi
«Sainte-Fare Garnot launched a systematic investigation of the pyramids of Dynasty 6; after a rather long interruption, Lauer continued the work with Jean Leclant, and they discovered many additional fragments in the pyramids of Teti (more than 700), Pepy I (more than 2,000), and Merenre» — continúa la historia de la excavación con Lauer y Leclant, y cifra los fragmentos nuevos: más de setecientos en Teti y más de dos mil en Pepy I
«After Maspero's provisional translation, a further rendering by Louis Speleers, which relied on the preparatory work of Sethe, appeared in French in 1924; the full English translation by Samuel A. B. Mercer that appeared in 1952 has since been superseded by that of Raymond O. Faulkner in 1969» — Hornung ordena las traducciones: la provisional de Maspero, la francesa de Speleers de 1924 sobre trabajo previo de Sethe, la inglesa completa de Mercer de 1952 y la de Faulkner de 1969 que la desplazó

Conceptos tratados
