La única tradición de esta base cuya fundación se discute dentro de ella misma, y las dos partes están fichadas. Su texto de salida pública es *Witchcraft Today* (1954), donde Gardner sostiene informar sobre un culto superviviente; la contratapa de su reedición dice, en cambio, que el libro «offered the world a new religion, Wicca» «Gardner — Witchcraft Today (1954) · p. 2». El propio Gardner se adelanta a la objeción y la nombra: «The only man I can think of who could have invented the rites was the late Aleister Crowley» «Gardner — Witchcraft Today (1954) · p. 40».
La segunda voz es de dentro: Doreen Valiente, «one of the founders of modern Wicca» «Valiente — The Rebirth of Witchcraft (1989) · p. 2» y suma sacerdotisa de Gardner, reconstruye la genealogía de la doctrina que ella misma recibió y le pone reparos —a Murray por no citar a Leland «Valiente — The Rebirth of Witchcraft (1989) · p. 19», y a Gardner por sus credenciales, que registra siempre precedidas de un «He says» «Valiente — The Rebirth of Witchcraft (1989) · p. 32».
