TRADICIÓN

Gnosticismo

La tradición tiene nombre propio y el nombre viene de la propia gente: el volumen que la abre en este corpus reúne «Part One is classic gnostic scripture, authoritative works read by an ancient group that called themselves “gnostics”—“people fit to have acquaintance (gnōsis) with god.”» «The Gnostic Scriptures, ed. Layton y Brakke 2021 · p. 16». Ese nombre dado por sí mismos apunta a una capacidad y no a una doctrina: «Gnostic scripture describes the salvation of the individual by the Greek word gnōsis, and the self-given name of the “gnostic” sect refers to their ability to attain gnōsis.» «The Gnostic Scriptures, ed. The ancient gnostics described salvation as a kind of gnōsis or acquaintance, and the ultimate object of that acquaintance was nothing less than god.» «The Gnostic Scriptures, ed. Layton y Brakke 2021 · p. 58».

The word “gnostic” has two meanings. One is a broad meaning, denoting all the religious movements represented in this book, and many more besides. The elusive category (“gnosticism”) that corresponds to this broad meaning has always been hard to define.» «The Gnostic Scriptures, ed. Layton y Brakke 2021 · p. 54». El otro sentido es el de la secta: «The other meaning of “gnostic” is narrow and more strictly historical: it is the self-given name of an ancient Christian sect, the gnōstikoi, or “gnostics.”» «The Gnostic Scriptures, ed. Layton y Brakke 2021 · p. 54». In this book the word “gnostic” is mainly restricted to the narrow, historical meaning» «The Gnostic Scriptures, ed. Layton y Brakke 2021 · p. 54».

The name “gnostic” most properly applies to members of this group. In modern scholarship they are sometimes called “Sethians,” “Barbeloites,” “Barbelognostics,” “Ophians,” or “Ophites.”» «The Gnostic Scriptures, ed. Layton y Brakke 2021 · p. 16». «In their mythic tales the gnostics do not refer to themselves, their ancestors, or their spiritual prototypes as “gnostics.” Instead they are “the offspring (seed, posterity, race) of Seth” or “the offspring of the light”; “the perfect race,” “the undominated race,” or “the immovable race”; or, even more obscurely, “Those People.”» «The Gnostic Scriptures, ed. Layton y Brakke 2021 · p. 67».

El Libro Secreto según Juan reserva lo que revela para los de esa raza —«indeed, it is difficult to disclose them to any but those who belong to the immovable race,g upon whom the spirit of life will descend and dwell with power.h•They will attain salvation and become perfect.» «The Gnostic Scriptures, ed. Layton y Brakke 2021 · p. 105»— y cierra la transmisión con la misma fórmula: «For this is the mystery of the immovable race.» «The Gnostic Scriptures, ed. Layton y Brakke 2021 · p. 110». Las Tres Tablillas de Set abren nombrando a Set «father of the livinge and immovable race» «The Gnostic Scriptures, ed. Layton y Brakke 2021 · p. 248», y la Revelación de Adán promete un estado en que no quede otra cosa: «No hateful matter shall be in their hearts, only acquaintance with god.» «The Gnostic Scriptures, ed. Layton y Brakke 2021 · p. 133».

Lo que la distingue como cuerpo de escritura no es una lista de libros sino un mito, y un mito de hechura deliberada: «Gnostic myth is the literary creation of theological poets—an elaborate theological symbolic poem, and not the spontaneous product of a tribe or culture.» «The Gnostic Scriptures, ed. Layton y Brakke 2021 · p. 62». Ese mito choca de frente con el relato que comparten el judaísmo y el cristianismo de su tiempo en un punto que Layton pone como el más agudo: «especially belief in the goodness and omnipotence of the Creator: gnostics believed that Satan made the world.» «The Gnostic Scriptures, ed. Layton y Brakke 2021 · p. 20».

The Bezels of Wisdom (Fusus al-hikam), trad. Austin 1980

The Bezels of Wisdom (Fusus al-hikam), trad. Austin 1980 · pp. 43, 317»

Rankine — Climbing the Tree of Life (2005)

DuQuette y Shoemaker (eds.) — Llewellyn's Complete Book of Ceremonial Magick (2020)

— Llewellyn's Complete Book of Ceremonial Magick (2020) · p. 213»

Eamon — Science and the Secrets of Nature (1994)

Manichaean Texts from the Roman Empire, ed. Gardner y Lieu

Gardner y Lieu · pp. 54, 64, 76»

The Meccan Revelations (selección de Chodkiewicz, Pir Press)

Said.«The Meccan Revelations (selección de Chodkiewicz, Pir Press), trad. inglés 2005 · p. 117 · ibn-arabi-meccan-revelations-2 · p. 203»

The Gnostic Scriptures, ed. Layton y Brakke 2021

Meyer 2007 · pp. 10, 850, 859»

The Elements of Theology (Proclo; texto revisado, traducción, introducción y comentario de E. R. Dodds, Clarendon Press, 2.ª ed.)

The Origins of Jewish Mysticism (2009)

The Origins of Jewish Mysticism (2009) · pp. 23, 38, 50, 329, 330»

Schmidt, tr. MacDermot, Brill 1978) · pp. 2, 7, 364»

Pistis Sophia (Códice Askew), ed. Schmidt, tr. MacDermot, Brill 1978

«Because the ancient sect of the gnostics is relatively early, indisputably gnostic—even lending its name to the broader category—and a historical source of other important movements, it deserves a primary place in any general study of gnostic religion.
