Su capítulo segundo abre con la partición que sostiene todo lo demás: «Here are two forts of Magick», y la primera —la que trata con espíritus inmundos y consiste en encantamientos— «is called Sorcery; an art which all learned and good men deteſt» «Della Porta — Natural Magick (trad. inglesa, 1658) · p. 9». La otra, la suya, es la que «all excellent wife men do admit and embrace» «Della Porta — Natural Magick (trad. inglesa, 1658) · p. 10».

6 entries — the work's own voice, with its locator«Here are two forts of Magick: the one is infamous, and unhappie, becauſe it hath. to do wich foul {pirits, and conſiſts of Inchantments and wicked Curioſity; and this is called Sorcery; an art which all learned and good men dete» — la partición fundacional del género, en la primera línea de su capítulo segundo. Lectura restituida de la ſ larga y del OCR: «There are two sorts of Magick… because it hath to do with foul spirits, and consists of Inchantments and wicked Curiosity… detest».
«neither is it able to yeeld any truch of Reafon or Nature, but ſtauds meetly upon fancies and imaginations, ſuch as vaniſh preſently away, and leav» — y por qué la descarta, que no es un argumento moral sino epistémico: la hechicería no puede dar razón ni naturaleza, se sostiene solo en fantasías. Lectura restituida: «…yield any truth of Reason or Nature, but stands merely upon fancies and imaginations».
«he mulſt be a skilful Phyſician: for both theſe Sciences are very like and neer together» — lo que exige del mago: que sea médico competente, porque las dos ciencias están próximas.
«Wonders of Nature are not to be concealed, that in them we may admire the Mighty Power of God, his wiſdom, his Bounty, and therein Reverence and Adore him» — su justificación para publicar lo secreto: las maravillas de la naturaleza no deben ocultarse, porque en ellas se admira el poder de Dios.
«let Envy be driven away, and adefire to benefit Poſterity, vanguifh all other thoughts» — cómo resuelve la objeción de que lo publicado pueda servir a los malintencionados: apartar la envidia y que el deseo de beneficiar a la posteridad venza a los demás. Lectura restituida: «…and a desire to benefit Posterity, vanquish all other thoughts».
Concepts treated
